Water Whistle Magic
Moms Morning Memo
Ever wondered how to combine a music lesson with a science experiment in a way that's total fun? Let's make a water whistle! This simple and engaging activity is perfect for a curious afternoon, and it's a great way to introduce basic physics and sound concepts to your children through play.
Activity of the Day

Water Whistle Magic
Craft a musical instrument from everyday household items and discover the science of sound!
Things you’ll need:
A plastic straw
Scissors
A glass of water
Step-by-step Process:
Flatten one end of the straw with your fingers and cut two small slits to form a "V" shape. This will be your mouthpiece.
Place the non-cut end of the straw into the glass of water, holding the straw at an angle. Blow into the straw and slowly raise it out of the water while continuing to blow.
Listen as the pitch of the sound changes. The sound will start deeper when more of the straw is submerged and will rise in pitch as the straw is raised out of the water.
This whistle is a fun and practical demonstration of how sound waves work and how altering the amount of air space inside the straw changes the sound’s pitch. This can spark conversations about sound, music, and even how real musical instruments work.
Why YOU’LL love this activity
This activity is a perfect chance to engage with your child in a shared discovery. You can experiment together, test different levels of water, or even different types of glasses to see how the sounds change. It's a playful, direct way to have fun while learning something new together.
And who knows? It might just be the perfect opportunity to enjoy a little music (albeit a bit quirky!) made right at home. It could also be the first step toward a greater interest in music or science which could unfold in many creative ways as your child grows.
