Universe in a Jar

Moms Morning Memo

Isn’t it wonderful when we can give our kids a glimpse into something vast and beautiful beyond our everyday sights? Today, let's captivate their imagination with a hands-on activity that brings the mysteries of the cosmos right into our homes: making a universe jar.

Activity of the Day

Universe in a Jar

Spark curiosity and create a dazzling representation of space with just a few simple supplies.

What you’ll need:

  • A large clear jar with a lid

  • Cotton balls

  • Water

  • Glitter in various colors

  • Glow-in-the-dark paint

  • A few drops of food coloring

  • Wooden skewers or a similar tool to stir

Step-by-step Process:

  1. Place fluffed cotton balls at the bottom of the jar. This acts as your star base.

  2. Mix water with food coloring and pour it over the cotton. Sprinkle glitter and add dots of glow-in-the-dark paint for a twinkling effect.

  3. Continue to layer cotton, colored water, and glitter until the jar is filled. Stir lightly with a skewer to create swirling patterns resembling galaxies.

  4. Close the jar tightly. Shake it gently to blend the colors and sparkles beautifully.

Why we love this activity

While assembling the universe jar, you have a wonderful opportunity to discuss the elements of the universe like stars, planets, and galaxies. This visual and tactile experience can help children understand complex concepts like gravity and light in a simple and engaging way.

This project offers a chance to share in the awe of the universe, sparking both conversation and creativity. It’s these shared moments of discovery that often stick with our children the longest, igniting a lifelong passion for learning.
