Tin Can Telephones

Moms Morning Memo

Have you ever caught yourself watching your child play, amazed by how even the simplest things can spark their imagination? Today, let's tap into that wonderful curiosity with a fun activity that echoes from our own childhoods: the tin can telephone.

Activity of the Day

Tin Can Telephone

Craft and connect with a playful project that’ll take you back to simpler times.

What you’ll need:

  • Two clean, empty tin cans

  • A nail or drill (to make small holes at the bottom of each can)

  • String (long enough to connect the two cans)

  • Paint or stickers (to personalize their creation)

Step-by-step process:

  1. Clean the cans, then make a small hole in the bottom of each using a nail or drill.

  2. Give your child free rein to decorate the cans with paint or stickers. This creative expression makes the project more engaging for them.

  3. Thread the string through each can’s hole, tying a knot inside to secure it. The string should be tight when stretched between two points.

  4. Show your child how to use their new telephone. One can talk into one can while the other listens through the second. Try changing the string’s length and see what happens to the sound.

Why we love this activity

This activity isn’t just about creating a toy from yesterday. It’s a practical demonstration of how sound waves travel. Through playing with their tin can telephone, your child will experience firsthand the basics of vibration and sound transmission.

In our daily rush, it's easy to miss small opportunities to connect with our kids. This project gives us a chance to slow down and enjoy a shared experience. It’s about strengthening bonds while having a great time together. Laughing over a string telephone can be as educational as it is memorable.
