Tin Can Stilts

Rediscover a beloved classic with a modern twist.

What You’ll Need:

  • Two large, empty tin cans (coffee cans work great)

  • Paint and brushes or colored duct tape for decoration

  • A hammer and nail or a drill

  • Strong string or rope

Step-by-step Process:

  1. Make sure the cans are clean and free of any sharp edges. You can paint them in bright colors or wrap them in colorful duct tape.

  2. Use the hammer and nail or a drill to make two holes near the bottom of each can (what will be the 'top' when standing on them). The holes should be opposite each other.

  3. Cut two pieces of string, each around 24 inches long. Thread each string through the holes in one can and tie knots inside the can to secure the ends. Repeat with the second can. Ensure the strings are long enough to comfortably reach your child’s hands when they stand on the cans.

Why we love this activity

Tin can stilts are a great way for kids to develop balance and coordination. As they learn to walk on their new stilts, they’re also engaging muscles and motor skills in a whole new way.

Once the stilts are ready, take them outside. Start on a soft grassy area which is perfect for practicing. As your kids get the hang of it, watch their confidence grow with each step. It’s not only thrilling but also incredibly rewarding.

While your kids play, share some of your childhood memories related to similar simple toys. It’s a beautiful way to connect generations through shared play experiences.
