Storm in a Glass

Moms Morning Memo

Grab your raincoats because today, we're bringing the storm inside! No need to worry about getting wet, though. We're about to whip up a tempest in a glass, right in your kitchen. This captivating experiment not only demonstrates the science behind weather patterns but does so in a way that's safe and spectacular to observe.

Activity of the Day

Storm in a Glass

This experiment brings the powerful forces of nature into clear view, literally!

What You'll Need:

  • A clear glass or jar

  • Shaving cream

  • Water

  • Food coloring (blue is great for rain)

  • A pipette or dropper

Step-by-step Process:

  1. Start by filling your glass three-quarters full with water—this is your "atmosphere."

  2. Squirt a layer of shaving cream on top of the water to form a cloud.

  3. Use the dropper to squeeze drops of food coloring onto the shaving cream. Watch as the "rain" seeps through the cloud and streaks down into the water.

Pro tips:

As you perform the experiment, discuss real-life weather scenarios where similar events occur. Why does it rain more in some places than others? What happens when a cloud doesn't have enough moisture? These questions can lead to a deeper understanding of weather and climate.

Encourage your little meteorologist to write or draw their observations in a science journal. What did they notice about the way the color moved through the "cloud"? How long did it take for the rain to start? Noting these observations can enhance their analytical skills.

Why we love this activity:

Observing a storm forming in your glass is not only visually stunning but also an excellent way to understand how clouds and rain work. The shaving cream represents the cloud, saturated with moisture, which, when too heavy, releases the "rain" drops. It's a brilliant demonstration of precipitation!

Let's turn your home into a mini weather station and discover the wonders of meteorology together. Don’t forget to share your stormy creations with us!
