Rock Stone Crocodile

Moms Morning Memo

This week, why not add some excitement to your crafting sessions with a project that's a bit out of the ordinary? Gather some stones from the yard, grab your paints, and get ready to create a charming rock stone crocodile! This delightful activity not only brings out the artistic side of your kids but also gives you a fun, creative way to decorate the garden or playroom.

Activity of the Day

Rock Stone Crocodile

Things you’ll need:

  • Smooth stones of various sizes (about 5-7 should do)

  • Green paint (acrylic works best)

  • White and black paint for details

  • Paintbrushes

  • Strong glue (to assemble your crocodile if you choose to permanently attach the stones)

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Take a walk with your child to collect stones that gradually decrease in size. These will form the crocodile's body, head, and tail.

  2. Paint all of your stones green. Depending on the age of your child, they can help with either broad strokes or finer details. Allow the paint to dry.

  3. Use white paint for the crocodile’s underbelly and teeth, and black paint to add eyes and nostrils. Each stone becomes a part of the crocodile, with the largest as the body and the smallest as the tail.

  4. Lay out the stones in a crocodile shape on a flat surface. You can either glue them together to keep the shape permanent or leave them loose for reconfiguration and play.

Why we love this activity

Crafting with natural elements like stones helps children connect with nature while exercising their creativity. Painting the rocks to create a crocodile teaches them about animal features in a hands-on way and might even inspire a story or two about their new critter friend.

After you’ve created one crocodile, why stop there? Collect more stones and create a whole family, or perhaps some friends for your crocodile. It’s a great way for children to learn about different animals and how they might interact in nature.

Get Ready to Snap Some Pics:

Not only will this project be a hit during the creation process, but it’ll also provide lasting fun. Place your crocodile in the garden to "guard" the plants or in the sandbox for imaginative play.
