Paper Parachute Making

Moms Morning Memo

As the weather warms up and the days grow longer, what better way to enjoy the sunshine than by making something that flies? Today, we're crafting simple, nature-inspired paper parachutes that your kids can launch from a deck, a balcony, or during a hillside picnic. It’s a project that combines a little bit of science with a lot of fun.

Step-by-step Process:

  1. Cut your paper into a circle. The size can vary, but around 8 inches in diameter is a good starting point for balance and ease of construction.

  2. Cut four pieces of string, each about 12 inches long. Tape one end of each string to different points around the edge of the circle.

  3. Tie the other ends of the strings to your bead or pebble. This acts as the weight to stabilize the parachute during its descent.

  4. Time to test your creation! Find a safe spot to launch your parachutes and watch them gently float to the ground. You might need to adjust the length of the strings or the weight for perfect performance.

Why we love this activity:

Creating parachutes offers a hands-on way to explore basic physics concepts like gravity, air resistance, and material properties. Plus, it gets everyone outside, testing and tweaking their designs, which is a perfect blend of learning and play.

While the kids are busy with their parachutes, take a moment for yourself. Whether it’s snapping a few photos, enjoying a coffee, or just soaking up the sun, relish the joy of watching your children engage with their creations. These moments of joy and discovery are precious!
