Moms Morning Memo
Looking for a cool and exciting activity to beat the summer heat? This week, we're bringing the magic of science into your backyard with a fun experiment: ice volcanoes. It’s an engaging and educational project that combines creativity, science, and a whole lot of fun. Get ready for some explosive excitement!
Activity of the Day
Ice Volcanoes

Create colorful eruptions right in your backyard!
Things you’ll need:
Small plastic cups or containers
Baking soda
Vinegar
Food coloring
Water
A freezer
A tray or large container to catch the mess
Step-by-step Process:
Fill each plastic cup about halfway with water. Add a few drops of food coloring to each cup and mix well. Then, add a few tablespoons of baking soda and stir until it dissolves.
Place the cups in the freezer and let them freeze completely. This will take a few hours, so it’s a great project to prepare in the morning and enjoy in the afternoon.
Once the ice volcanoes are frozen solid, run a little warm water over the outside of each cup to release the ice. Place the ice volcanoes on a tray or in a large container to contain the mess.
Pour vinegar over each ice volcano and watch as colorful eruptions occur! The reaction between the baking soda and vinegar creates fizzy, colorful bubbles that mimic a volcanic eruption.
Why we love this activity:
Ice volcanoes are a fantastic way to introduce kids to basic chemistry while keeping them entertained. The combination of freezing, coloring, and erupting provides a multi-sensory experience that’s both educational and fun. Plus, it’s a perfect way to cool down on a hot day.
Encourage your kids to experiment with different amounts of baking soda and vinegar to see how the eruptions change. They can also try mixing different food colors to create new and exciting effects.
