Home Planetarium

Moms Morning Memo

Ready to bring a sprinkle of the cosmos into your home? Let’s build a star projector that lights up your ceiling with the beauty of the night sky. It’s simpler than you think, and the results are truly out of this world. This weekend, why not gather the family for a cozy evening under the stars—right in your own living room?

Activity of the Day

Create Your Own Home Planetarium

Craft a gateway to the galaxies from the comfort of your couch.

Things You'll Need:

  • A sturdy cardboard box

  • A small flashlight or LED light

  • Aluminum foil

  • A pin to poke holes

  • Optional: black paint to enhance the inside of your box

Step-by-step Process:

  1. If you decide to paint the box black inside, do that first. It helps to create a darker backdrop for your stars, making them really pop when projected.

  2. Stretch aluminum foil over one end of the box and secure it tightly. Using a pin, poke holes in the foil. You can create random stars or use a constellation guide to make specific patterns.

  3. Place the flashlight or LED inside the box, pointing towards the foil. Ensure it’s steady—maybe tape it down so it doesn’t shift.

  4. Close up the box, turn on the light, and aim the starry end towards a blank ceiling or wall. Watch your creation come to life, casting a galaxy of stars around you.

Why we love this activity

Unlike staring at a screen, this hands-on project encourages you to manipulate physical materials and engage with basic principles of light and astronomy. It’s a great opportunity to discuss how light travels through small openings and why stars are only visible at night.

Once your stars are shining, you can take turns telling stories about ancient constellations, or even invent your own! It’s also a perfect chance to introduce a little science about the universe in a way that’s tangible and immediate.
