Frozen Dinosaur Excavation
Moms Morning Memo
This summer, bring the excitement of a dinosaur dig right to your home with a frozen dinosaur excavation! This fun and engaging activity will keep your kids entertained and spark their curiosity about prehistoric creatures. Let's dive into the icy world of dinosaurs!
Activity of the Day
Frozen Dinosaur Excavation

Discover hidden dinosaurs frozen in ice!
Things You’ll Need:
Small plastic dinosaurs
Water
Food coloring (optional)
Freezer-safe containers or silicone molds
Tools for excavation (plastic spoons, droppers, paintbrushes, etc.)
Step-by-step Process
Place a small plastic dinosaur in each freezer-safe container or silicone mold. Fill the containers with water. If you want colorful ice, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before freezing.
Put the containers in the freezer and let them freeze completely. This will take a few hours, so it’s a good idea to prepare them the night before.
Once the ice blocks are frozen solid, remove them from the containers and place them in a large bin or tray. Provide tools like plastic spoons, droppers with warm water, and paintbrushes for your kids to use in their excavation.
Let your kids use the tools to chip away at the ice and uncover the hidden dinosaurs. They can use droppers with warm water to melt the ice faster or gently tap and scrape with the spoons.
Pro tips:
Add a bit of baking soda to the water before freezing, and give the kids vinegar in droppers to create fizzy fun as they excavate.
Set up a small “museum” area where your kids can display the dinosaurs they’ve freed from the ice.
Use this activity as a starting point to learn more about dinosaurs and prehistoric times.
Why we love this activity
Frozen dinosaur excavation combines sensory play with a bit of science and a lot of fun. It encourages problem-solving and fine motor skills as kids figure out the best way to free their dinosaurs. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to cool down on a hot day.
