Activity of the Day

Egg in a Bottle Experiment

Watch an egg magically slip into a bottle

Things You’ll Need:

  • A hard-boiled egg (peeled)

  • A glass bottle with a narrow neck

  • Matches or a lighter (for grown ups only!)

  • A strip of paper

💡 Inspiration

Steps to Perform the Egg in a Bottle Experiment

  1. Prepare the Egg and Bottle Make sure the egg is peeled and the bottle is clean and dry.

  2. Light the Paper An adult should light a strip of paper and drop it into the bottle.

  3. Place the Egg on the Bottle Quickly place the hard-boiled egg on the mouth of the bottle. Watch as the egg gets pulled into the bottle.

  4. Observe and Explain Discuss with your kids why the egg was pulled into the bottle. The flame heats the air inside the bottle, and when the flame goes out, the air cools and contracts, creating a vacuum that pulls the egg in.

Pro Tips:

  • Try the experiment with different sizes of eggs and bottles to see how it changes the results.

  • Discuss other examples of air pressure in everyday life.

  • Encourage kids to draw or write about what they observed during the experiment.

Why Kids Love This Experiment

Kids are fascinated by the visual magic of the egg being sucked into the bottle. It’s a hands-on way to learn about air pressure and have fun with science.
