Easy-Peasy Egg Carton Locomotive

Moms Morning Memo

Got any egg cartons lying around? Great! Let’s transform them into a colorful train that’s sure to delight your little conductor. This isn’t your average craft project; it’s a ticket to imaginative play and skill-building, all wrapped up in one fun-filled activity.

Activity of the Day

Easy-Peasy Egg Carton Locomotive

What You'll Need:

  • Empty egg cartons

  • Colorful paints

  • Cardboard for wheels

  • Glue

  • Pipe cleaners or straws (for linking the carts)

  • Decorative bits and bobs (think markers, stickers, or whatever sparkles)

Step-by-step process:

  1. Snip your egg cartons into segments. Each segment is a car of your train, so you can make it as long or as short as you like.

  2. Hand over the paints to your tiny artists and let them color each car in their favorite shades. It’s amazing what a little color can do!

  3. Cut out circles from the cardboard for wheels and stick them on each car. They won’t roll, but they’ll sure look like they could!

  4. Attach the cars using pipe cleaners or straws. Just poke a hole through each side of the cars and thread through. Now you've got a train that's all connected!

Pro tip:

Time for the fun details. Add stickers for headlights or use markers to draw passengers peeking out the windows.

Create a whole day around your train creation. Read stories about trains, sing train songs, and maybe even have lunch in the “dining car” of your newly minted cardboard train.

Why we love this activity:

This DIY train sets the stage for both storytelling and adventure. It’s more than crafting; it’s creating a base for imaginative play that can extend to every corner of your house. Plus, it’s a sneaky way to sharpen those fine motor skills as your kids paint, cut, and build.
