Build Your Own Balance Scale

Moms Morning Memo

Get ready for a project that tips the balance toward fun and learning! This week, why not engage your little ones with a hands-on activity that introduces basic physics concepts in a playful way? We’re building a homemade balance scale, perfect for budding young scientists to explore and experiment with weights and balances.

Activity of the Day

Build Your Own Balance Scale

This simple project not only teaches about gravity and mass but also enhances problem-solving skills as kids decide what to weigh and predict which items are heavier.

Things you’ll need:

  • A sturdy coat hanger

  • Two small buckets or containers

  • String

  • A selection of various household items to weigh

  • A rod or chair back to hang the scale

Step-by-step process:

  1. Position the coat hanger so it hangs horizontally from the rod or the back of a chair.

Cut two equal lengths of string. Tie one end of each string to the handles of your buckets. Attach the other ends to each side of the hanger, ensuring they are evenly spaced so the hanger stays balanced.

  2. Gather various household items. These can be anything from stuffed animals to fruit, small toys, or craft supplies.

  3. Let your child experiment by placing different items in the buckets. Discuss which side dips lower and why, exploring the concepts of heavier and lighter.

Pro tip:

Turn this into a game where kids guess which items will weigh more before testing their theories. Keep score, and for every correct guess, they earn a point!

Why we love this activity

As children adjust the items and see the immediate effect on the balance scale, they're engaging in early mathematical thinking and understanding the cause and effect without even realizing it! It’s a fantastic way to make abstract concepts tangible.

Don’t forget to snap some pictures of your child in action. These are moments of learning and joy worth remembering.

Looking forward to hearing all about who wins your balance games!
