Baking Soda Balloon Experiment
Moms Morning Memo
Are you ready to add a little science magic to your day with your kids? Let's turn your kitchen into a mini-lab and amaze your little ones with a simple but exciting science experiment. Today, we're going to blow up a balloon using nothing but baking soda and vinegar!
Activity of the Day
Baking Soda Balloon Experiment

What you’ll need:
Baking soda
Vinegar
An empty plastic bottle
A balloon
A funnel (optional but helpful)
Steps-by-step process:
Stretch the balloon a bit to make it easier to inflate. Then, using the funnel, add about two to three teaspoons of baking soda inside the balloon.
Fill the bottle with approximately one-third cup of vinegar.
Carefully fit the neck of the balloon over the top of the bottle, making sure not to let any baking soda spill into the bottle yet.
Lift the balloon, allowing the baking soda to fall into the vinegar. Watch as the chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda creates carbon dioxide gas, inflating the balloon!
The science behind the fun
This experiment is a fantastic demonstration of an acid-base reaction. Vinegar (acetic acid) reacts with baking soda (a base) to form carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate. This reaction not only inflates the balloon but also provides a clear example of how gases expand.
Why we love this activity
This simple experiment helps children understand the basics of chemical reactions and the properties of gases. It’s also a perfect opportunity to ask questions and predict outcomes, which enhances critical thinking skills.
As you and your child watch the balloon inflate, take the opportunity to discuss what’s happening and why. It’s not only educational but also a fun way to spend quality time together. The excitement of seeing the balloon expand can turn any ordinary day into a memorable learning adventure.
Get ready to see the wonder in their eyes as you explore the basics of chemistry together.
